A Brief History

Our family of pubs were founded by Bob after reading J.P. Donleavy’s, The Ginger Man. The novel is about an American’s bawdy indiscretions while studying at Trinity College, Dublin. It was banned for obscenity in both the United States and Ireland when it was published in 1955. Bob, a man whose life bore some resemblance to the rapscallion from The Ginger Man, saw a need for quality draught beer in a pub similar to those described in the novel. The pubs are now neighborhood staples that have grown, with various owners, throughout Texas, Connecticut, and New York.

The Ginger Man first took root in Houston, Texas in the year of 1985. With overwhelming success, it spread throughout The Lone Star State. In the midst of it all, Bob and his family relocated to Manhattan. As he settled and brought quality beer and Texas hospitality to the Northeast, he realized that we would be unable to give the time that was needed to run the Texas locations. With the guidance of longtime patron, friend and advisor, Dr. Rick, Bob sold the original locations in 2000.

Today, each of the Texas pubs operate with the same spirit in which they were founded. Each location features an inviting bar with over 100 beers on draught and in bottle, a spacious beer garden style patio, and friendly atmosphere. If you find yourself in Houston or DFW, make yourself at home at The Ginger Man and enjoy our pub fare, specialty beer, classic cocktails, and a glass of wine. There is something for everyone at your neighborhood Ginger Man.
